MTV Roadies 7

It’s hard to ignore the titillating promos — 20 barely-clad, hot women all over the two dishy, young contestants. Splitsvilla is the latest reality show to hit telly, but it sure comes with a wicked twist. The first romance reality show on Indian television, this show on MTV is proudly promoting the overtly ‘naughty’ content and is making quite a scene with young viewers, or Youngistaan, if you may.

Going where Indian telly has never gone before, this reality show explores the torrid game of love. There’s no attempt to even play down on the fact that it is going to be a dirty fight to the finish with 20 women fighting for the attention of the two men. Splitsvilla it is, when the men unceremoniously ‘dump’ women to eliminate them.

After the phenomenal success of Roadies, MTV is embarking on a totally new ball game. Says Raghu Ram, whose brainchild this show is, “I wanted to do something different after a big adventure reality show like Roadies. There has never been a romance reality show of this kind on Indian television. Plus, the idea of giving the Roadies kind of reality treatment to love was very appealing. We wanted to explore the dark, twisted side of love,” he explains.

Or to put it in the words of Ashish Patil, General Manager MTV India and Vice President Creative & Content, “It’s a Karan Johar love story meets a Ram Gopal Varma thriller”!

The show has already popped eyeballs of viewers with its bold content and promos. The moral brigade may be fast on the heels of MTV, but the channel heads have no qualms and are quite upfront about their intentions. “Yes, it’s bold. But not sleazy at all. We make shows for young adults — not parents! The purpose of the show is to entertain. It’s a show about 20 girls and two boys fighting it out for love. Our promos have to mirror that reality — they possibly can’t have a saas or bahu talking about ‘Harey kkkaanch ki choodiyaan’ now, can they?” says Ashish.

Raghu Ram adds in defense, “The purpose of every show is to provide entertainment and get ratings. The same is with Splitsvilla. The promos are there to play on certain facets of the show, establish expectations and communicate the fact that this is different from everything you’ve ever seen in India before, to create an impact, curiosity and talk value. That’s what every promo attempts to do. We just seem to be able to get more attention.”

Parents and prudes may be raising a hue and cry, but if there’s someone not complaining, it has to be the two lucky boys Vishal and Varun who were former Roadies. Ashish says, “One has a chocolate boy image and the other a rugged, one. You can see how both have their own unique personalities playing out.”

Varun Sahni says, “Boy, we are lucky… there were people lining up at the MTV office trying to swap places with us.” But sometimes the excitement gets a little out of control too. Adds Vishal Karwal, “Situations do get messy sometimes. But it feels great being the centre of attraction and having all these pretty girls fight over us. Two girls is a party… 20 is a riot!”

Apart from all the catty drama, romance may be on the cards for these happy boys too. “We did get close to some of them and kind of made a ‘connection.’ We built some unique friendships and there were one or two who totally fell in love with us,” they claim.
