MTV Slitsvilla 2 : Nikhil interview to media over Slitsvilla latest controversy

I’ve just got off the phone with a reporter from India news – Shivangi Sahani – a sweet girl who wanted my quote on the ongoing Splitsvilla saga. I then received another call from Puneet, from the same channel, who wanted “my point of view” at 8pm for 5 mins.

Could I do a phone-in?

I asked him whether in the past, during phone-ins with other guests, the conversations had been edited so that just the juicy bits were aired and the boring bits were not.

He said, yes – this had happened in the past.

You see, the truth is boring. The truth doesn’t give you TRPs. Fantasy is so much more entertaining (not to mention, financially lucrative too).

When I said this to Puneet, he had very little to say. He (and his bosses) are very well aware what sells and what doesn’t. I guess being told point blank by me, that India news had everything to gain – and I had nothing, left him very little room to maneuver.

So I declined to do the phone-in, as I refuse to become another clown in this circus that the media companies are running. I instead intend to write my opinion here and express my point of view to people who matter, rather than the multitude that give these channels their ratings.

Before we take this one step at a time, one allegation at a time, lets just clearly understand that the basis for Swagata’s allegations are supposedly things she heard from Joanna. Why she has chosen to take Joanna’s words for gospel, I can’t understand – especially since she says Joanna’s a liar, a slut and a prostitute. I find Swagata’s comments disgusting and unfit for human consumption at any level in society.

Next, before we get into the allegations, I question motive. Every action has a motive. We know what the media’s motives are, but what are Swagata’s, Nalini’s and Varun’s?

Could their motive be “the truth”? Hmm… I wonder… truth, four months after the shoot finished and over a month since the final episode aired. “Truth” sought by a man who failed to tell MTV he was going through a divorce when he took part in Splitsvilla (I met his divorce lawyer at a hotel who told me his client was taking part in the show). It was too late by then to remove him from the show since most of it had been shot already.

Or maybe, a month after the show is over… some people have realised that the earth hasn’t paused for breath, the heaven’s aren’t heaving with the adulation of fans anymore, but life… theirs and the rest of the world’s, has just gone back to being whatever it was.

Boring.

That, in my opinion – is a far more powerful motive than the truth, at least as far as present company is concerned.

MTV Splitsvilla 2 in scandal:Joanna and Sakshi Pradhan has linkage with crew and Nikhil

MTV Splitsvilla 2 is over but still in sensation with a new controversial statement given by its one of its contestant, Swagata G Shah.

Joanna Magee and Sakshi Pradhan were accused of “pleasing” the directors and production team to get into the final.

Joana Magee is the one of the finalist while Sakshi Pradhan is the winner.

Splitsvilla 2 was the very popular show aired on MTV and got the vibrant response from the viewers for the wild exposure and offensive conversations between the contestants.

For the same reason the Government has issued show cause notice to MTV channel based on “utterance of unfair remark to another participant in Splitsvilla-2.

Now a former contestant from the show’s series 2, Swagata G Shah, alleged that the show is rigged and requires contestants to “please the big players” in order to be ‘voted in’ and get sufficient coverage.

She declared few statements:

Pool party- the platform to expose

“After the show was over, we had a pool-side party. After almost everyone had left we saw Joanna Magee and Sakshi Pradhan in the pool with Hitesh (the show`s director) and a few other men from the production team. They stayed there till the next day. I also heard a room was booked for Joanna through Cafe Mambo, a disc at Goa`s Baga Beach, where Nikhil Chinappa performs. She stayed on in Goa even after the show had ended”

A Night Stand with a Boss- Just for fame

Hitesh who works with the production house Colosseum, which produced Splitsvilla 2 for MTV, abused his position to back Joanna in return for sexual favours. “When I re-entered the show, Joanna boasted she would win it.”

I snapped, “I don’t sleep around for Rs 6,000 like you do.” ‘I had heard about Joanna from people in Chandigarh, her hometown.’

During this conversation, Hitesh pulled me out and said, ‘You get out of Splitsvilla right now. I just want this chick [sic] out of the premises.

You can’t speak anything against Joanna because Joanna se mujhe kaam hai. Tumse mujhe koi kaam nahi hai.

She jibed, “If I had slept with him like Joanna did, I wouldn’t have been voted out so early and given so little footage”.

She added, “I had seen Joanna kissing Hitesh at a party. But I am not sure if MTV was aware of these wrongdoings.”

Disclaimers

When asked from the counterpart Hitesh was in no mood on commenting the buzz, “I am not authorised to say anything,” and escalated the issue to Rajeev Laxman, the creative director of the show.

Laxman remarked, “It’s all speculation. We don’t have to explain ourselves to tabloids. I don’t know whether MTV was aware. As far as sexual favours go, I don’t think anyone is aware. I don’t need to respond to these stupid allegations from tabloids.”

Persuading the Contestants:

Swagata revealed that former participants are being persuaded to sign a contract that forbids them from revealing details about the show to the media.
She further added, ”Sharon Irani, the contestant manager working with the production company Colosseum, asked us to sign a new contract on July 24. he said three or four other contestants had already signed the contract, whereas to my knowledge, they haven’t. I have been receiving calls every day, asking me to sign it.”

Backings:

Shakshi the winner of the show uttered, “I faced two rounds of auditions and made a wild card entry. Nothing was fixed. It was a reality show and the people behind it were professionals. They were nice and friendly towards us. I don`t want to comment on what others have alleged.”

The statement declared by Swagata Shah may be a biased one to get the fame which she dint experienced over the show. Now she would be in news and for a glance, ‘Swagata Shah’ the name would be traced by every media maniacs.

But figuring out the logics exposes many facts lighting the claims of Swagata Shah.

“Joanna did not audition for Splitsvilla 2. She was selected for season one but couldn’t participate.

So, she was given a chance in season two. Both Joanna and Sakshi seemed to be friendly not only with Hitesh, but other housemates like Suyash Kumar and Param as well,”

Cheshta Bhagat, another contestant, agreed. “I heard about Joanna’s escapades. But I am sure Sakshi Pradhan is a sl’’t.”

“We saw Joanna smoke contraband stuff many times during the show. We saw her rolling grass or coke [sic] in paper. But it was always off air. She would say she needed a strong drag before she faced the testing times.”

Swagata Shah also told that the contestants are being cheated over the show, “The Vodafone sets gifted to us during the show were taken back. We all received a certain number of clothes sponsored by Levi’s but Joanna got extra pairs.”

s Aaishwari Chouhan gets Nikhil Chinappa spilling the beans on his life, career graph and his latest venture with PDM – the Sunburn Festival in Goa.

Excerpts:

You started your career in radio and theatre in Bangalore. Were such unconventional careers as acceptable then as they are now?Earlier, people were more aware of traditional careers like medicine and law but of late, unconventional careers are becoming more acceptable. But I only believe in the fact that it is only passion that makes any career successful for the person pursuing it.

You came to Mumbai after winning the MTV VJ Contest. How did your life change after that?Once in Mumbai, travel and work schedules became quite hectic because this is how it is for people who come to Mumbai to ground themselves here. There were two major things that I first did – (a) brought a hell lot of new underwear for myself and (b) learnt how to survive on cornflakes and milk for breakfast. Although I stayed in touch with all my friends back in Bangalore, making friends in Mumbai was very tough and it took me sometime before I got myself real good friends to hang out with.

You are also famous as the Flavour Boy on Madras FM. Whats with the Flavour Boy image?Those were the best days of my life. I enjoyed life the most on radio. Radio is a medium where you instantly play music , whereas on television or elsewhere, you stand in front of the camera and schedule the music to be played. If ever I have to choose between theatre, veejaying or radio, I would like to go back to radio. In fact, I would like to have a radio station of my own and play music as I want to. But this is exactly what we are doing at Sunburn 2007. We are getting the best DJs to perform with the aim of playing music for everyone to make the listening enjoyable. I always wanted these DJs to play in India, and with PDM and Smirnoff thinking on the same lines as I do, Sunburn finally happened.

In 2000, you appeared in a movie called Snip and then in Kudiyo ka Hai Zamana. Do you think you will have to work really hard on the acting end to make it as a successful actor?I am very clear that I am not an actor. It irritates me to paint my face and wait for hours before a five-minute shot. But this doesnt mean that I have cut all my options out on the acting end. I am okay with fun roles and fun scripts. In fact, Snip and Kudiyon ka hai Zamana happened because I liked my roles there. I have zero Bollywood intentions which is very unlike any other television personality. I have a mind of my own!

What made you shift to deejaying in 2002? Why have you been away from trick deejaying?For me, music is above everything else. Trick DJ with something like scratching and all while playing music, adds on to the DJs performance for sure. But the core of deejaying, which is about what song to play and when to play it and how to blend it with other songs, is what every DJ should specialise in before opting for trick deejaying. Although I have always been away from trick deejaying, I concentrate more on the other aspects of deejaying. For instance, programming is the main aspect. Playing good music for at least three to four hours is what the DJ should know well. Thats his job! Other than that, working with equipments, multi-players, effects machines, looping are the other aspects of deejaying. For me, deejaying happened out of frustration. I mean, I was so sick of the song Kaliyon ka Chaman that to make sure that no such song is every played at any pub; I got into deejaying.

Being an architecture student, you never thought of pursuing architecture seriously?I miss my career in architecture. I wish I could take up two jobs at the same time. But architecture is the kind of career which requires all your time and cannot be done part time; apart from the fact that you can do your own house or your friends houses. And I have done the interiors of my house, according to what I feel and what makes me what I am.

How has an academic grounding in architecture help you in your career graph?While hosting shows for MTV, it is my academic background which helps me talk, behave and react the way I do. And at Sunburn, it is because of architecture that I can take decisions on a lot of things. I believe, the landscape matters the most. Architecture has helped in arranging for the layout of Sunburn as in where will the ticket counters be, how many ticket counters I want, their sizes, the add-ons to the counter and all that. Because these are all the things that make the most of the space and it is finally what people notice when they step anywhere first. I want people to enjoy from their very first step into the festival and that can be done with the right kind of architectural sense.

And where does all the madness and razor sharp humour come from? Coffee! But truly speaking, I have an attitude wherein I cant tolerate fools for any which reason. I am kind of an extreme person as in either I will have zero interest in something or else will be completely sucked into it. I also love not being mad and just sitting with a cup of tea back home and reading a book. So my life in extremes is what the root to all my madness is.

How would you introduce Sunburn to someone who has never heard about it?Hmm I would say that Sunburn is Asias biggest music festival happening at Goa. Its happening on a beach and in daytime so dont forget to carry your hat and sunglasses. Even if you dont understand the music, this festival is entirely fun-oriented and will open you to a new, great experience.

So, whose baby is Sunburn?I can simply say the idea was PDMs and the creative input is from my end. Smirnoff has a great role in all the ground research and activity which is why Sunburn is actually happening.

And whats your involvement with PDM?I am the creative consultant at PDM and their festival partner. I look after the creatives and the content. Apart from this, I am not involved with PDM any which way.

How have you been able to be creative at MTV?At MTV, we actually have a tough time convincing the producer to allow more experiments with the show we work on.

For instance, we just had in-house shoots for MTV Select and then, one day it struck me to go to the college campus for it and it worked out well. And then, the idea of having a bathroom set-up; this has been the most spoken about concept that we used at Select but now we have ripped it apart. Also, when stars come on the sets of Select I never make them feel as if they are stars and even they enjoy it. Its simply because people are tired of listening to Aapne iska music banaya. Aapko kaisa laga? Getting into an informal conversation with the stars is what makes the show different and is liked more by the audience.

With MTV, how has your job profile grown? And with MTV revamped – what is your contribution overall presently?With MTV, I am more into improvising my shows and all my creatives mostly revolve around my own shows only. But with MTV going online, I am trying to contribute to the digital end as well.

Whats the next big thing for Nikhil Chinappa apart from Sunburn?Hopefully, Andaman & Nicobar Islands is what I am planning around February. I have taken 49 dives all together and I expect my 50th dive to be at Andaman & Nicobar. Also hopefully again, I am planning to take a month off and go for a vacation. So these are the two big things that I am looking forward to in 2008.

MTV India wanted Varun to wins

MTV India sources wanted Varun to wins because of his capability and communication skill. He was more manipulative then cute Vishal . Thats why even after approval of Shradhha towards Vishal. A final task was hosted But varun fails in it.

Vishal is far behind in attitutde. Even they have in their mind Prianca and varun as host. Prianca as we all have seen can break anybody. The show to be telecast is based on knowing other celebrity. This needs communication skill.

Ranvihjay supported and pushed varun to a limit to break Shradhha and chose him as winner. If she had chosen him then their would have no task.
